Rebus

Exercises 4

A rebus is a kind of word puzzle that uses pictures to represent words or parts of words. The term rebus also refers to the use of a pictogram to represent a syllabic sound. A logo says Eye Bee M by pictures only, you still can read as IBM.

I did a rebus in IKEA, it reads as Eye Key Yacht. This exercise shows how an icon can replace words, in a visual way to present any brand or a story.

Research4: Revolution Symbol

This was the flag during the Russian Revolution. The symbols on the flag are a hammer and a sickle.Russia was not doing well Economically or politically at that time , so the hammer represents the workers (factory/industrial), and sickle: Farmers. This was a strong symbol because its meaning seems general, but it simply represents what kind of people in the revolution was exactly for workers.

Nowadays a strong revolution symbol will also apparels on clothing as many people use it as symbolic decoration.

Love and Care for the Greens.

Philosophy

Research 5

Western philosophy really begins with Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. They looked at the works of their predecessors and said in effect “why can’t you be more like your brother?”. Russell was still saying the same thing 2300 years later.

Death is the end of a person’s life. Death is an interruption to life, like sleep or disease, only permanent. Life is to be lived in spite of it. Do you believe in heaven or the fact people die when their lives end.

Tactics of Manipulation

Research 6

A type of social influence that aims to change the perception or behavior of others through underhanded, deceptive, or even abusive tactics.

It is hard not to smoke where all your friends are smokers. Part of the reason people smoke is to be a part

of the crowd that they admire.

In Class Exercises4 *Pixel Portrait*

This is an exercise to do 5 pixel portraits, by using 50x50 pixels grid in Photoshop. One pixel by one to colour in to create likeable school staff portraits.
It takes a long time to create each portrait, which those colour pixels has massive of different colours on a face. So I limited down the colours to 6 or less by adjustment colour in photoshop. This way makes it a bit easier to colour in, and I love the finial image all though pixel portrait can takes forever to do.

Guess who are they:D

By the end, not hard to guess:)

In Class Exercises3 *Road Sign*

In this exercise I have to create road signs on those yellow triangles. In Illustrator I've draw out icons which are used as what it describes, as usual. e.g. football represents soccer pitch, popcorn for a cinema, a surf broad in big surf picturing. etc...
At the end, I didn't like what I did, because all the icons for the road sign people already known as a comment sense. I should have use a character with different elements to create different scenes. Next time come to this kind of exercise I would like to use creativity a bit more, and it will be much more fun than just use usual elements.

Research3: 5 Symbols that Changed their Meaning

(Above)Mudra:
Mudra is a special type of sign language spoken with the hands using hand gestures and finger postures. It's hand positions of the Buddha, are often incorporated in meditation and yoga practice.
Now days, many people use the hand sign as an okay sign, in ancient Sumeria and Persia, charms and amulets have been discovered of fingers and hands in the modern OK position, joined along with horns implying fertility. The three fingers extended outward are symbolic of ecstatic union with the Goddess, the third member of the pagan trinity.

Thumb up:
In the ancient Roman combats, when a gladiator was vanquished it rested with the spectators to decide whether he should be slain or not. If they wished him to live, they shut up their thumbs in their fists (pollice compresso favor judicabatur); if to be slain, they turned down their thumbs ... Our pupular saying, Thumbs up! expressive of pleasure or approval is probabbly a perversion of this custom.
          R. Garnett, 1887: 'They had unanimously turned their thumbs up. "Sartor", the publisher acquainted him, "excites universal disapprobation".'

      J. Dixon, 1896: 'To turn the thumbs up. To decide against. The Romans in the amphitheatre turned their thumbs up when a combatant was not to be spared.'

R.Y. Tyrrell, 1907: '"Thumbs down" means "spare him ...": the signal for death was "thumbs up".'

The modern equations: thumbs up = O.K., thumbs down = not O.K.

the Middle finger:
Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore [soldiers would] be incapable of fighting in the future. This famous weapon was made of the native English yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as "plucking the yew." Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, "See, we can still pluck yew!"
Over the years some "folk etymologies" have grown up around this symbolic gesture. Since "pluck yew" is rather difficult to say, like "pheasant mother plucker," which is who you had to go to for the feathers used on the arrows for the longbow, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodental fricative "f," and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger salute are mistakenly thought to have something to do with an intimate encounter. It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows that the gesture is known as "giving the bird."

Inverted cross: Originally represented the apostle Peter's humility in his martyrdom. He insisted that he be crucified upside-down, because he felt that he was unworthy to die in the same position as Christ. But today, especially in the rock music culture, it generally represents the opposite: satanism and its mockery of Christ. Lucifer continues to twist God's wonderful truths and works into lies and deceptions.

Shamrock :
In studying Celtic history, scholars have discovered that the shamrock was a charm to ward away evil.
Long age, when Ireland was a land of the Druids, a Christian bishop known to us now as St. Patrick, came to teach the word of God. Although the origins of the shamrock are lost in antiquity, legend suggest that St. Patrick plucked a shamrock from Irish soil to demonstrate the meaning of the Trinity- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The plant was reputed to have mystic powers in that its petals will stand upright to warn of a approaching storm. The shamrock remains Ireland's most famous symbol. Now the
shamrock is also commonly associated with the symbol of luck.

Conclusion: A symbol is born when a group of people agree that an artistic motif will carry a certain meaning. This can also vary from region and culture, from one time period to another. Many changed its meaning by misunderstanding by people with different point of view, also by overuse it changes the original meaning itself.

Research 2_ Symbols represent Superstition and Culture

Symbols represent Superstition and Culture

Tibetan Prayer Wheel: Devices for spreading spiritual blessings and well being. Rolls of thin paper, imprinted with many, many copies of the mantra (prayer) Om Mani Padme Hum... are wound around an axle in a protective container, and spun around and around.

Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying this mantra, out loud or silently to oneself, invokes the powerful benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion.

HAND OF FATIMA (daughter of Muhammad): Many Muslims believe that the image of the hand with an eye in the center will protect them from the "evil eye". While this symbol often appears on magical charms, amulets, and jewelry, it is seen in many other places.

Many serious Muslims view this as folklore or superstition. Many people place it in their homes where the guests can see in the moment they enter. As there is a widespread belief that it will protect the house and household from disasters primarily fire.

TRIDENT: Called "the devil's pitchfork," it has symbolized major gods in various pagan cultures. In India, it is linked to the Hindu "trident-bearer" Shiva, spouse of the skull-bearing goddess Kali. More recently, thisthree-sponged spear has been used by Hindu militants in India to intimidate Christians.

It was symbolic of lightning. Here Poseidon or Neptune, ruler of the sea or underworld, holds the trident, traceable to the horned, hoofed sun-god of Babylon, who carried the trident or pitchfork. The trident is also a representation of the male-female symbol.

WISHBONE: Civilizations dating back to the 4th Century (Etruscans, Romans... Britain, America) have held turkey or chicken wishbonecontest. Pulling the dry turkey or chicken bone until it snapped ("lucky break"), they believing the winner's wish or dream would come true.

In today's increasingly superstitious culture, many believe that this symbol will "catch" their dreams, bring good luck, and make their wishes come true. As in contemporary witchcraft or magic, the object becomes a channel of "good" energy. Astrology and horoscopes link it to Saggitarius. It might also be confused with the Lambda (looks like a lower case, upside-down "y"), the Greek letter adopted by the International Gay Rights Congress in 1974 as the global symbol of homosexual "pride".

Taijitu: representing the principle of yin and yang, which in Chinese means the two opposing principles in nature (light/dark, male/female), it also represents mortal world and nether world.(White and Black colour in the symbol).

"The Supreme Polarity that is Non-Polar"__ the ancient Chinese symbol used originally to represent a widespread belief in unity, polarity, holism, and magic.

Summary: Superstition is in every culture and history, it comes from many of people who believe in spite of evidence. People often use their superstition symbol on Tattoo, Jewellery, Decorations. To protect themselves from fears you may call that a believer, it also symbolise what fear or trust in magic you are.
